Technology

The sequencing is performed by simple electrical circuit, combined with an electromechanically actuated hydraulic reversing valve.  This valve reverses the fluid flow to the door actuators so that they can move opposite the main gear legs.  Click on the images below to view hydraulic schematics of the stock Lancair system vs. the Sequenced Gear System.

We deliberately avoided microprocessor or PLC-based systems in order to optimize reliability, cost, and weight.  Landing is after all a critical phase of flight, not a good time to worry about possible voltage spikes, static discharge, or software bugs.

The SGS also eliminates some parts from the stock kit, notably the sequence valves, the aft wheel well hydraulic lines, and several tee and 4-way fittings.  The custom hydraulic manifold block enables much simpler and easier routing in the cockpit floor area:

The Sequenced Gear System Includes:

  1. Detailed installation instructions, diagrams, and photos.
  2. A complete parts inventory list.
  3. All necessary hydraulic components, including the reversing valve, the custom manifold block, and a backup dump valve.  You may need some additional aluminum hydraulic tubing, although our factory kit came with enough to do the job.
  4. All necessary electrical components, including a replacement DPDT landing gear gated toggle switch, weatherproof position-sensing switches, and the reversing valve actuator assembly.  You will need to supply some wire to complete the installation.
  5. A metal template and #44 bit for drilling mounting holes for the new positioning switches.
  6. Mounting hardware for the new positioning switches, the hydraulic manifold block, and the reversing valve.

The SGS is installed using the same methods as the stock Legacy kit - no new tools or techniques are needed.

Fail-Safe Features

The SGS uses the same the emergency backup system designed by the factory: If hydraulic pressure is lost for any reason, the inner gear door springs will force the doors open, and the gear legs will fall by gravity.  Because the ball valve has a small "dead zone" that could block fluid flow if the actuator were to stop moving at exactly the wrong time, we provide a second dump valve to relieve pressure in the gear door hydraulic circuit.
